Review:
When Mummy hit theaters in 1999, critics everywhere rinse it a poor man's Indiana Jones. Although the two films are about as similar to those of Dr. No is GoldenEye (thankfully), I suppose comparisons with non-stop adventure film and other unavoidable. In the end what really counts, is the film quality is the level at which it can entertain. And if there's one thing that mum was good, it was entertaining. Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and Arnold Vosloo was well chosen for their roles. The Mummy Returns is easy to see that the second sequel churned out to satiate the greedy money machine that Hollywood has become, but it has a few things working for it. One thing that is immediately clear is that the sequel had a lot to be a movie that could be enjoyed without ever having seen the original. Only the references to the previous film made fill narrative gaps Imhotep who is and why he is who he is. Adding Scorpion King was an interesting attempt to give the film a new antagonist, but the lack of Screen Time does not work well in favor of the keys. Another key would be to develop a better Imhotep was a competition between a girlfriend and her name. Imhotep originally thought Rachel Weiszs character to be re-born girlfriend, so the use of a woman who looks exactly like her at the same time to create a new key to development is needed differently. Most people tend to give a damn about the complex history of keys and want to know if this movie is entertaining. And it is entertaining, all right. Hardly a boring movie much more length and Oded Fehr does a bang-up job of providing the Mad-Max-cum-hero Indiana Jones. I would like to know where they get these groovy costumes and tattoos, they look pretty nice. In any case, when all is said and done, it is eight to ten films. Some poorly constructed story details here and there, but there are some very entertaining action sequences make up for them. Dont listen to the nay-sayers. This is a matinee-style materials in its (almost) the best. Get the DVD when it comes out, it will at least tide you over until George Lucas gets his head out of the infamous and realize that the VHS era is completely over.
